“Whatsoever your hands find to do, do it with all your might.”
Ever since she was a young girl, Moina Belle Michael relied on this motto.
In March 1917, German U-boats sunk another American ship—and the nation was outraged!
Moina Belle Michael, a schoolteacher from Georgia, knew she had to act.
Moina knitted socks and sweaters and rolled bandages for the Red Cross.
She delivered books, magazines, and candy to camps nearby. She and friends invited soldiers home for dinner.
Moina set up a desk in the basement of Columbia’s Hamilton Hall, where soldiers, sailors, marines, and secretaries came during their free time.
Moina went “poppy hunting” on the streets of New York.
The Poppy Lady
Two days after Moina bought the twenty-five poppies, World War I ended.
Moina spent every spare moment, and all the money she could save, urging groups to adopt the Flanders Fields Memorial Poppy to honor and support the veterans.
Moina became known as the Poppy Lady. She received recognition and awards from around the world, but it was nothing compared to seeing her dream of helping the soldiers to come true.
Each time we wear a red poppy, we thank the men and women who gave so much for our country’s freedom.
We promise to remember them.
Always.
